The Learning Clinic

The Problem – Learning

Each of us has a different way of learning because our brains are wired differently. These subtle neuro-developmental variations can greatly affect how productive we are in the learning process. In addition, learning is profoundly influenced by social, emotional and behavioral factors. Therefore, if the learning process is to be truly effective, the teaching process needs to be individualized rather than conducted in a standardized fashion, thereby taking into account the remarkable diversity of the mind. Frequently, when this individualization does not occur, the result is undue frustration and consequent failure with learning.

For many individuals, frustration with the learning process is compounded even further by the existence of a learning disability. Unfortunately, these learning disabilities are typically misunderstood and go undetected by both parents and/or teachers. When school becomes a struggle, the admonition to just “try harder” doesn’t work. It’s almost never an issue of laziness or lack of motivation, but rather, the result of extreme frustration and fatigue associated with recurring failure.

Over the years, learning difficulties/disabilities have tended to be categorized into an oversimplified set of problems and, consequently, students have been treated with “cookie cutter” solutions or a “do more of the same” approach. The reality is learning difficulties/disabilities are oftentimes much more complex than they appear on the surface. In addition, social, emotional and behavioral concerns can exist that further complicate the learning process.

Our staff of licensed psychologists, counselors and instructors can provide diagnosis and treatment for many learning difficulties/disabilities including:

Reading (Dyslexia)
Math (Dyscalculia)
Written Expression (Dysgraphia)
Study Skills / Test Taking
Cognitive Output

At The Learning Clinic we help overcome learning challenges by matching specific teaching and learning skills to an individual’s personal strengths, while concurrently addressing any social, emotional or behavioral concerns through our professional team of psychologists and counselors.

The Solution – The Learning Clinic

At The Learning Clinic we have a unique approach to learning. To begin with, we apply a set of highly effective learning principles created as a result of abundant scientific research and over a quarter of a century of experience. We believe these principles are essential for optimal success. They are:

  1. Determine an individual’s unique cognitive strengths and match the appropriate teaching methods to those strengths.
  2. Provide individual attention and help from a caring and knowledgeable teacher/coach who utilizes lively and interesting materials.
  3. Make it possible for an individual to experience success in learning academic skills that were once frustratingly hard.
  4. Maintain consistency and frequency in an individual’s attendance in order to master the necessary skills.

These principles and our staff of professional psychologists, counselors and instructors are what separate us from the “franchised” learning centers. We are experienced in recognizing, defining and treating all the elements of a learning problem. This gives us the ability to custom tailor learning strategies specific to the individual. The end result is a comfortable and enjoyable learning environment that specifically addresses learning challenges, nurtures self-esteem and encourages personal growth.

Through our comprehensive neuroeducational evaluation we are able to identify an individual’s innate neurodevelopmental strengths. We then have the insight to understand how learning can proceed most efficiently and we can eagerly begin using this knowledge to help the individual be more successful in school and in life.

While our staff of psychologists and counselors is available to work on the social, emotional and behavioral aspects of the problem, The Learning Clinic offers the following academic services to students of all ages:

Reading (Beginning Learning to Read, or later, Reading to Learn)
Comprehension and Verbal Expression
Math (Arithmetic, or Advanced Algebra and Geometry)
Study/Organizational/ Writing Skills
• Test Taking, SAT/PSAT Preparation

For each Learning Clinic program, the number of sessions is determined by the projected amount of time required to attain the agreed-upon goals. In most cases, the frequency of these sessions can be adapted to fit your schedule. All of The Learning Clinic programs are designed to maximize a student's potential for academic success and achievement.
